I had the opportunity to go to Stowe, VT last week on business, and stayed Saturday to get in some skiing.
Conditions were not great – it was too warm, and by mid-afternoon the snow was soft, sort of slushy. Still, to borrow an expression from the game of golf, a day on the mountain beats a day in the office, eh?
In the moment, it was, well, it was not epic like A-Basin, CO. I have to go with spiritually uplifting. I can tell you I was singing along to Kiss at the top of lungs on the way back home afterwards, and just totally chilled out and feeling good.
I wish the family could have been there – I really enjoy seeing my son ski. The girls are not too crazy about it, but they enjoy the hot chocolate!
First ski of the season, and even though I am in shape, I guess I am not in ski shape. I felt it, just a little, but I felt it.
Here is a video from the lift. I may look like heck, but I felt totally there!

nice! I have only tried to ski once in my adult life and it wasn’t pretty. But I still want to do more of it! Glad you had a great day!
Absolutely gorgeous! Love the video too!
Believe it or not, I have never even tried to Ski. Gasp!
Looks like a fun trip!! Great pictures…. and now I want hot chocolate
I, John’s wife, will only accompany John if I am staying in lodge sipping hot chocolate. It is the perfect treat to have by a fire while I watch everyone ski.
I miss skiing so much! I haven’t been in gosh, I think it’s been 9 years. It’s not something my husband is into. I would love to take the boys though. I guess I should see if Papa is up for the challenge of helping me teach them to ski?
We took our kids to Smuggler’s a few years ago and we put our son in ski camp. The instructors were great and did a fantastic job teaching my son to ski. I’m sure Stowe has the same caliber of instructors.
Great post, love your pictures and the video, glad you loved it!
I live in Northern NH with lots of beautiful Mountains to ski, and yet I have never tried it, love outdoors sports but just don’t see myself as a skier.
I thought everyone in NH skied! You should give it a try soon.
We went to Vermont over the summer and did a huge drive up through the mountains and into Stowe. LOVED it. That whole area is gorgeous!! We aren’t skiers though, so we wouldn’t head up in the winter.
John and my son are the only skiers in the family so far. However, I tried and loved cross country. I would highly recommend cross country for a beautiful, scenic experience and a great workout.
Those pictures are gorgeous! I have seen no snow this year so it was nice to at least see it in pics.
Dawn
I’m so happy that the last couple of years we’ve been having our kids learn to ski (and my son snowboards) and now it’s so great to have us all be able to go! Learned to ski in VT as a kid, love Stowe!
That’s wonderful. I, John’s wife, and my daughter still need to learn to ski to make it a family affair. Maybe this winter will be my year!
Awesome! I haven’t been to VT in a couple of years so this is just the fix I needed!
I have lived in New England my entire life and have never been to Vermont. My family always skies in NH.
Looks like you had a great time! I am kind of embarrassed to admit that I am a born and bred New Englander who never learned how to ski. Now I’m afraid to try because of my surgically repaired knee. My husband, on the other hand, is a huge snowboading fan and is taking our 6yo for his first lessons this month.
Yah! How awesome. We are going to Loon this weekend and I can’t wait!
I don’t downhill ski (I grew up xc skiing) but I sure do LOVE the mountains!! Gorgeous pictures! Glad you had a good time!
Cross country is the only type of skiing I can do at this point. I hope to learn downhill so I can join John on his runs.
Good for you! Sking sounds like so much fun. I haven’t skied since I was about 14 yrs old. I just tried snowboarding the other day- that was a little hard on the ego- let me tell you! I think its great you are out there doing it and having fun!
